Palm Springs Aerial Tramway Hotels
Construction of the Tramway was an engineering challenge and was soon labeled the "eighth wonder of the world.'' The superlative was earned because of the ingenious use of helicopters in erecting four of the five supporting towers. Some 20 years later, the Tramway was designated an historical civil engineering landmark.
All About the Aerial Tramway
When visiting Palm Springs be sure to enjoy a ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. The Tramway allows visitors to enjoy 365 degree views of the Coachella Valley while traveling in the world's largest rotating tram cars up the side of Mt. San Jacinto. The trip up or down the mountain takes approximately 15 minutes. The electric tram cars travel at a speed of 21 miles per hour, allowing riders to take in the sights. Over 12 million people have enjoyed riding the tram since it opened.
Electrical engineer Francis F. Crocker dreamed up the idea for the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway in 1935 as a way to escape the heat of the valley. Work on the tram did not begin until 1950. Helicopters played a key role in transporting workers and materials to build the Tramway and station at the top of the mountain. They were even used to hoist four of the tram's support towers into place. The Palm Spring Aerial Tramway opened on September 14, 1963.
The tram provides a great way to escape Palm Springs' summer heat. However, the temperature after arriving at the top can be as much as 30 degrees cooler than the temperature on the valley floor. Be sure to dress for the weather when you reach the top. In the summer, volunteers offer guided nature walks or you can obtain a permit to hike and explore on your own. 5 primitive campsites offer the opportunity for an overnight stay, with a small charge per person. Since it snows on Mt. San Jacinto in the winter, activities include snowshoeing, cross country skiing and snow camping.
You can choose from a few options for mountaintop dining. Peaks Restaurant offers fine dining along with spectacular views, while the Pines Café provides cafeteria style meals. Lookout Lounge serves appetizers and provides full bar service. Bringing food for a picnic offers another meal option. Two gifts shops offer a collection of unique Tramway souvenirs and books about the area. You can buy a souvenir photo to remember your Palm Springs Aerial Tramway experience.
