An Oasis In California Honoring General Patton And American Veterans
Established in 1988 in the California desert, The General Patton Memorial Museum was built on the sight of the Desert Training Center from World War II, at Chiriaco Summit near General Patton’s headquarters at Camp Young.
Chiriaco Summit, near Joshua Tree National Park, was established in 1930 by Joe Chiriaco, who was born to Italian immigrants. Joe built a store and gas station he ran with his wife and children. Patton, who was familiar with the location and surrounding areas, made contact with Joe asking for a personal tour of the region. Patton felt the terrain was the perfect location and he established the training center and Young Military Base.
In 1988, the Chiriaco family established the non-profit museum to honor American veterans. The artifacts on display in the museum were donated by veterans and their families, which includes a collection of tanks circa World War II through the Vietnam War.
On the steps of the museum, a full size statue of General Patton and his pit bull Willie was erected against a backdrop of a flying American flag and MIA flag. Inside is the museum gift shop which sells military caps, t-shirts, coffee mugs, books, and DVDs.
The General Patton Memorial Museum is the location of the west coast Vietnam Wall. The names of the fallen from the Vietnam War are etched into black granite. In addition, the General Patton Memorial Museum's "Defenders of Freedom Wall", lists the names of active duty soldiers who served from September 11, 2001 to the present day. On the museum ground, sits a small, single wall, outdoor chapel built of stone surrounded by concrete benches.
The town of Chiriaco Summit has an airport (open seven days a week), a cafe, gas station, and a store. There is a U.S. Post Office, a trailer park, and an ice cream shop. There are no overnight accommodations for tourists, except for the trailer park. In case of emergency, a 24 hour towing services operates seven days a week. When planning a trip to the museum, the Chiriaco Summit Southwest Travel Information Center provides information for travelers.
