Downtown Palm Springs Hotels

Downtown is where the old Palm Springs and the old, old Palm Springs meet. Pre-WWII Mediterranean revival buildings jut up against spare, modernist '50s and '60s architecture. One of the landmarks in the latter style is the old Kries Drug Store/Oasis Room at the corner of Palm Canyon Drive and Tahquitz Canyon Way.

All About Downtown

A short 100-mile jaunt from the heart of Los Angeles, the city of Palm Springs gained popularity and fame in the 1950s as a retreat for Hollywood elite such as Frank Sinatra, Humphrey Bogart, Gene Autry and others. The tidy, grid-shaped city surrounds the Palm Springs International Airport, which is within a five minute car ride of no less than five golf courses.

Visitors to Palm Springs should bring sunscreen and some spending money, as the area features a bevy of recreational opportunities such as horseback riding, hiking and tennis. An overhead view of the city of Palm Springs shows the stark contrast between the lush, green acreage and the barren and dry surrounding desert. Palm Springs has far more golf courses per-capita that any other city in California, offering 23 seperate top-notch 18-hole experiences within a ten mile radius of the airport.

The city is home to about 45,000 residents, many of which are well into retirement. The seniors add to the mellow and relaxed pace of the city that provides a refreshing contrast to the rabid pace and dirty air of Los Angeles. Here are some places to visit and things to do while in Palm Springs.

The Palm Springs Air Museum is located next to the main runway at the Palm Springs International Airport, and is certainly worth visiting, especially during a flight delay. The Palm Springs Art Museum rests along the edge of the giant mountain range that forms the western edge of the city, allowing visitors to soak up some culture before heading across the street to one of two giant shopping centers, complete with cutting edge boutiques and fine jewelry stores.

Palm Springs is especially popular during the first half of January, as it plays host to the annual Palm Springs International Film Festival. Dozens of Hollywood stars and starlets arrive in the city and stay in the classic and luxurious Viceroy Palm Springs or the modern and progressive Hotel Zozo. When the sun sets, the partying crowd heads to Zelda's Nightclub, a lively and lavish locale in the heart of the city.
